A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has on Thursday granted bail to a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh (retd), in the sum of N2bn.
In his ruling earlier today, presiding judge, Judge Okon Abang held that Mr. Badeh must come with two Abuja-based sureties with N1 billion each, in addition to surrendering his international passport.
The judge maintained that the alleged offence is a bailable one as he then directed the accused to deposit his international passport at the court.
The Judge explained that the conditions of the bail were influenced by the weight of the charges.
Justice Abang said: “The principle of presumption of innocence operates in favour of the accused person.”
Mr. Badeh is currently facing corruption charges, as he was accused of receiving N3.9 billion as part of $2.1 billion arms money allegedly diverted by former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
He denies the allegation.
Justice Abang had on March 7 ordered that Badeh be remanded in prison shortly after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arraigned the former military chief and a company, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, on 10 counts of money laundering.
