The Ekiti State Government says it is taking proactive steps to ensure that the fresh outbreak of Lassa fever, which reportedly claimed the life of a medical doctor in Asaba, Delta State, does not spread to the state.
According to a statement on Sunday, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo, said this in Ado Ekiti during a meeting with stakeholders in the health sector.
He said the emergency outbreak centre constituted in the state in the wake of the national outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in January had been reactivated and placed on high alert in view of the recent development.
According to Ojo , the state government organised the forum with stakeholders to harmonise plans on how to improve surveillance, infection and prevention and control at the various health facilities in the state.
He added that six sub-committees that included case management, contact tracing, social mobilisation, infection control, laboratory – evacuation – decontamination and logistics had been set up to prevent and effectively tackle any suspected case of the disease in the state.
He added that treatment and isolation centres had been set up at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, and the Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, Ado Ekiti for isolation and treatment of suspected and confirmed cases of the disease.
