The Rector of Imo Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Rev. Fr. Wence Madu, has asked the Federal Government to intervene in herdsmen’s destruction of crops at the institution’s farm.
He made the appeal yesterday when the Special Adviser on Media to the Imo State Governor, Dr. Ebere Nzewuji, paid an inspection visit to the farmland.
Madu said the herdsmen’s cattle were also harassing the school’s members of staff and students. He explained that the farm was cultivated in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and traditional rulers in agriculture.
According to him, the herdsmen’s attacks have wasted the expected harvest to provide food for the people. Madu stressed that the destruction of the farm has also aborted the IITA’s goal of using it as an incubation centre for the training of graduates and groups.
He urged all relevant stakeholders to intervene to stop the herdsmen from further grazing on his farm. The governor’s assistant, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Chukwuemeka Enwere said necessary legal means would be used to ensure that the ugly trend was arrested.
He said it was wrong for anyone or group of persons to use animals to destroy other people’s property. While promising to convey the matter to the governor, he urged the rector, members of staff and students to remain peaceful.
