The National Conscience Party in Katsina State on Sunday called on the state government to hold the local government elections just as it maintained that only elected council officials would give room for accountability in the management of council funds.
The NCP said this in a statement made available to journalists in Katsina.
It said, “At present there are no elected local councils, we wonder how the funds accruing to these councils are being expended. It is our stand, that the elections into these councils should be held without any further delay, so that the people would know how funds were being managed.”
The statement signed by the party’s state chairman, Mallam AbdulMumini Sani, frowned at the current situation of things in the state, which it maintained, could be improved upon.
The party said the people of the state had not been benefitting from the dividends of democracy which the party in power hitherto promised them.
The NCP said, ”When the present administration of Aminu Bello Masari took the mantle of leadership on May 29 2015; the euphoria that greeted its coming to power was ecstatic. But this ovation was not to last long, as events unfolding made the people to question the sincerity of change they clamoured for.

“The way and manner the government is being run is making people to wonder why the change at all if all manner of people serving in the state are ruling without focus and vision with no rule of law and that life in the state is a survival of the fittest, with most families finding it difficult. So many people have resorted to stealing foodstuffs to survive. Katsina people are going through harsh times as people cannot afford a meal per day, civil servants cannot afford to buy food to sustain their family, as the cost is so high and is not commensurate with what they take home as monthly wages.
“We in the NCP want to know why a person as important as the chief executive of a state is always in the habit of churning out lies on a daily basis ranging from youth empowerment, which it has failed to deliver.
“Katsina being a predominantly farming state has failed in the agricultural sector for the past one year and months, the government was in office, Imagine a kilogramme of maize, sorghum and millet that was previously sold at N110 is now over N400 in our open markets, of which it is hard for one to come by. This, we believe, is a change to hardship.”
The NCP said the state’s parastatals and the local governments were devoid of workforces and there was no replacement of those who had retired, which was the norm in the civil service structure.
