The council also approved five commissioners for the National Population Commission.
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Jigawa State Governor, Badaru Abubakar, said this while speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the council meeting.
Abubakar, “We deliberated on the confirmation of the IG. There was almost a unanimous acceptance of his confirmation. So, the Police Council resolved to confirm the acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.”
On the council’s expectation from the new IGP, he said, “Most of the comments received proved to us that the IG is of an impeccable character and we expect him to conduct himself as such.
“We believe he is very honest and transparent. We also believe he will continue to be honest and do his best for the country.”
Ambode, however, noted that Idris would still need to be screened by the Senate.
On the approval of INEC commissioners, the governor said, “We deliberated on the appointment of six national commissioners for INEC. You know INEC is supposed to have 12. We had earlier approved six sometimes last year and an additional six were actually approved today. Those six represent six nominees from the six geo-political zones.”
The commissioners include: Mohammed Haruna (North-Central); Ahmed Mu’Azu (North-East); Abubakar Nahuca (North-West); Prof. Okechukwu Ibanu (South-East); May Mbu (South-South) and Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola (South-West).
He added, “You may wish to know that we approved five new commissioners for the National Population Commission. They are Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji (Oyo); Patricia Iyaya (Benue); Benedict Ukpong (Akwa Ibom); Dr. Halu Bala (Kebbi); and Gloria Isofo (Bayelsa).”
Ambode said the council was also briefed on the state of the economy by Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning.
According to Ambode, the council is confident and also approves the measures the Federal Government is putting in ensuring that Nigeria goes on the path of recovery as quickly as possible.
When asked to explain the exact measures being adopted by the Federal Government to ensure that the economy was revived, Abubakar said the focus was on the diversification of the economy especially on agriculture and solid mineral development.
