A group of youths in the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State have appealed to the leadership of the party to pick a younger person as the running mate of the party’s candidate, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).
Akeredolu emerged as the candidate of the party at the primary held on Saturday in Akure, the state capital.
The group, under the auspices of Progressive Youth League, in a statement issued on Monday, declared that the party should be preparing to lose the forthcoming governorship election if the leadership failed to pick a youth as the deputy governorship candidate.
In the statement issued on Monday by the state Coordinator of the group, Mr. Adebowale Akinlosotu, the group stated that the deputy governorship candidate must not be older than 45 years.
The statement partly read, “The voting strength of the youths in any election is a huge factor which can make any political party that picks them as the deputy governorship candidate to enjoy the overwhelming support of the youths and which will make the victory come easy, because the commitment, strength and passion of the youths for the struggle of winning any election cannot be under estimated.

“Our general position is that having somebody of our age grade (between 30 and 45 years of age) in the joint ticket will give them the necessary confidence and sense of belonging in government. This will create the necessary synergy that will catalyse youth empowerment.”
The group, which said youths held higher elective positions in many developed countries of the world, urged the APC leadership to give youths the chance of being the deputy governorship candidate of the party.
Meanwhile, the APC in Ondo State has denied the report that the delegates’ list used for the last Saturday’s governorship primary of the party was doctored.
The Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Abayomi Adesanya, said in a statement on Monday that the election was free, fair and credible, adding that the process of accreditation was hitch-free and commendable.
The statement read, “We reject the insinuations been peddled in some quarters that the delegates’ list used to conduct the governorship primary was doctored. This allegation is unfounded and untrue.
“The delegates’ list had been in existence and was used to conduct the primaries of the 2015 Ondo State House of Assembly and National Assembly elections.”
