Warri Wolves football club on Sunday defeated Nasarawa United by a lone goal in one of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches played at the Warri Township Stadium.
The game, a week 34 encounter of the ongoing league season, saw the home team netting the only goal of the match through a penalty.
Kelvin Itoya converted the spot kick in the 66th minute when King Osanga was fouled in the visitors 18 yard box.
Wolves have been battling relegation in recent time following unimpressive performance but the victory seems to have rekindled the hope and trust the fans have in the team.
Both teams missed several scoring chances but it was Wolves who carried the day in spite the superlative performance of the Nasarawa team.
Coach of Nasarawa Utd, Kabiru Dogo, expressed satisfaction with the officiating of the game, saying that it was an indication that the Nigeria league was growing.
”It was a good game, we had our own chances but could not convert them; the home team was lucky because the game could have gone either way.
”As far as Nigeria league is concerned, it is even easier to play clubs at the top than those at the bottom.
”If Warri Wolves can continue fighting like this and with little support and motivation from the government and the management they can avoid relegation, the boys are not bad,” he said.
Abdul Mansour, Coach of Warri Wolves expressed hope in the ability of the team to survive relegation.
He urged the fans to continue to support the team.
”We have two away matches and two home matches, if Rivers Utd can pick a point here, we can also pick points in Port Harcourt,” he said.
