[TR News] Don’t renege on your promise, ex-militants beg Okorocha

share on:

A group of former militants in Ohaji Egbema, Imo State, has appealed to the Imo State Government not to renege on its promise of rehabilitation and a better life for repentant cultists in the state.

Two former militant leaders in the area, Kingsley Gift, also known as ‘General’ Module and ‘General’ Banga made this appeal in a statement sent via electronic mail to Southern City News.

The duo stressed that though they were tired of wreaking havoc in their domain, the pledge from the State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, that they would be rehabilitated was an incentive behind their decision to surrender their arms.

According to Gift, “We have done so many bad things in our place; we are tired of people running each time we visit our villages even for good. The truth is that violence has not done us any good and when government asked us to embrace peace for a better life, we quickly agreed.”

In his remark, ‘General’ Banga said, “We are happy when government said we should hand over our arms so that they can train and empower us to be useful. I am assuring you that we will not go back to street life again. That is why we don’t want government to disappoint us.”

The two militant leaders urged other militant/cult groups in the state to embrace the amnesty programme of the Imo Government for peace to reign in the state.

They also expressed gratitude to the Deputy Chief of Staff in Imo State Government House, Kingsley Uju and the Managing Director of the Imo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, Prince Iyke Uwakwe, for facilitating the amnesty programme.

It will be recalled that a group of militants had in September surrendered cache of arms and ammunition to Okorocha in response to the amnesty declared by the governor.

The state government had expressed regret that people’s predicament arose from their neglect by oil companies, adding that the situation has often led to violent confrontations.

Okorocha commended the repentant militants for their display of patriotism and promised that their demands, grievances and agitations would be articulated and forwarded to the appropriate quarters for prompt action.
