Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday expressed firm belief in the unity of Nigeria, saying that it could not be negotiated.
The governor said the 1914 amalgamation of the then Southern and Northern protectorates was an act ‘ordained by God.’
He spoke on Saturday in Benin, the state capital, during the country’s 56th Independence Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Oshiomhole said, “I am not reluctant when I say and I wish to repeat it today that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable. The unity of Nigeria cannot be renegotiated. It is not whether it is perfect or not perfect. I know of no nation that is perfect and our elite must rethink.”
The governor also condemned the recurring political disagreements among various interest groups, adding that they were not justifiable reasons to sabotage the economy.
He stated that Nigeria would not be intimidated despite the destruction of public infrastructure by “sponsored groups.”
He also pledged the support of the state government to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, the current economic challenges facing Nigerians are temporary.
